The Board of Supervisors and County Engineer discussed a proposed levee improvement project near Smithland in Tuesday’s weekly Board meeting. A local landowner had noted erosion damage to a levee that was repaired in 2010 along the left bank of the Little Sioux River, basically across the river from the town of Smithland.
The County Engineer has obtained all permits for the project from the Corps of Engineers and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The estimated project cost is between $60,000 and $100,000 to line approximately 1900 lineal feet of levee depending upon whether broken concrete or crushed quartzite revetment (riprap) is used. Crushed concrete is cheaper material, but not as durable as the quartzite material.
The landowner whose property is protected by the levee has offered $30,000 toward the project. The Board directed the County Engineer and County Budget Director to determine how to pay for the balance of the project cost and report back to the County Supervisors for a decision.
