Summary

Provide nutrition assessment, education, referral, and care coordination services. Provide nutrition services to other SDHD public health programming.
Essential Functions
• Function as the competent professional authority for determination of WIC program eligibility and certification following assessment of individual anthropometric, biochemical and dietary data.• Conduct the following assessments necessary for determining nutritional risk: diet history, measurement of length/height, weight and hemoglobin. Nutrition Interview in person or via phone calls.
• Tailor the WIC food package to best meet the individual dietary needs of the participant.
• Coordinate, develop and assure nutrition education to all participants, both on an individual and group basis, while monitoring all materials used in the education program.
• Assist with quarterly nutrition audit reports for Nutrition Assistant
• Provide nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support that is responsive to the participant’s needs and interests Note: High risk participants must be scheduled for at least one individual education contract by a licensed dietitian. If the initial contact was provided by a licensed dietitian, then the second contact can be provided by any CPA or a licensed dietitian as determined by the licensed dietitian that certified the participant. If the initial contact was provided by a non-Licensed Dietitian CPA, then the second contact must be provided by a licensed dietitian.
• Provide in-depth individual nutrition counseling and care plans as needed or requested by a participant.
• Promote and provide support to breastfeeding families and breastfeeding efforts.
• Provide referral of WIC participants to other sources of health care, as needed, including accurate documentation and follow-up of referrals.
• Maintain adequate and accurate participant records according to established policies and procedures.
• Ensure participant records are kept secure and confidential.
• Maintain daily statistics to assist in time studies, program and agency statistics.
• Provide program outreach information to agency staff, interested professionals, outside agencies, organizations and individuals.
• Provide nutrition services to the Child Adolescent Health Program, Lead Program and other public health programming.
• Develop needed program tools and plans and assist WIC Coordinator in development of the Nutrition Education Needs Assessment, Community Health Needs Assessment and the nutrition section of the local WIC grant application.
• Represent the Family and Community Health Division by serving on SDHD and community agency committees and other groups by providing information about public health services and participating in the assessment of community needs to establish or revise public health programs, policies and procedures.
• Provide role modeling and mentoring to students of accredited schools of nursing and nutrition, baccalaureate and master’s degree programs.
• Assume personal responsibility to keep informed of current changes and trends affecting nutritional needs/care and maintain competencies and skills.
• Provide professional nutrition related information and education to agency staff, interested professionals, outside agencies, organizations and individuals.
• Participate in activities that support the planning and development of programs through work with other agencies to improve and/or expand services available to the public.
• Report cases of suspected abuse or neglect of children and adults to the proper authorities in accordance with department policy and state law.
Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability
Must possess Bachelor’s Degree in nutrition, dietetics, food systems management or closely related field. Must possess current licensure as a Licensed Dietitian in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Dietetic Examiners or able to obtain licenses within 6 months of employment. Current dietetic registration preferred through the Commission on Dietetic Registration for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or eligible for registration within 6 months of employment. A minimum of 1 year experience in general dietetics is desired with experience in maternal/child nutrition preferred. Mandatory Child and Adult Reporter Training required or obtain within 6 months of employment. Computer skills required. Must have valid Driver License, ability to obtain car insurance at agency-specified liability level and reliable transportation. Physical ability to lift 50 lbs.
