Boat Registration and Title Information

The Woodbury County Treasurer has the responsibility of registering and titling vessels of Woodbury County residents and non-residents if the vessel is principally used in Woodbury County.

Boat registrations expire on April 30th, every three years (starting in 2007). Boat fees are based on the length of the boat, whether it uses a motor or not, and whether it is a standard boat or a personal watercraft. If the registration is late, it’s just a 5.00 penalty. To renew by mail, it is suggested you call into the Woodbury County DNR office to get a price. Also, to renew by mail there is an additional 1.00 fee for postage and handling. All boats 17 feet and longer require a title (except canoes and kayaks).

State Sales Tax Information

  • All sales and transfers of boats, other personal watercraft, off road vehicles and snowmobiles are subject to 7% tax plus any applicable local options taxes if purchased in Iowa or 6% tax plus any applicable local options taxes if purchased in another State . This applies to sales by individuals as well as dealers.
  • Anyone purchasing a boat from an individual should obtain a receipt or bill of sale that shows the cost of the boat. The buyer will then pay the sales tax on the cost of the boat to the County Treasurer.
  • If a trailer is purchased with the boat, the 5% motor vehicle use tax is paid to the County Treasurer.
  • The bill of sale should separate the cost of the boat and the cost of the trailer.
